The upcoming sci-fi extraction shooter, Bungie's highly-anticipated game, has resurfaced with the announcement of a exclusive testing phase set to begin in October.
First announced during the 2023 PlayStation Showcase, Marathon has undergone a tumultuous creation process. In October 2024, the developer stated it was aiming to begin alpha testing during the coming year. A period of silence followed, until the project was re-revealed in spring with a Sept. 23 launch date. However, following initial testing resulted in mixed reactions, the studio announced in June that it was delaying Marathon indefinitely.
Despite Marathon has already encountered its fair share of controversies, Bungie appears determined to make certain their project avoids Concord's fate. Currently, it appears the project's progress is moving forward again, as Bungie just disclosed that it has conducted multiple private tests to gather feedback on Marathon" since this past summer. The developer is expanding access, allowing more players to catch a glimpse of the experience via an forthcoming "closed technical test."
Considering it's a closed technical test, it's naturally more exclusive than, say, an open beta. To participate in the technical test — which runs from Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. PDT to Oct. 28 at 10 a.m. PDT — players must meet the following pre-requisites:
Applications are open now, and to be eligible for the technical test, players must complete registration by the October 16th deadline. PC users can also submit their application via Steam starting on October 13th, with digital platform registrations due by October 26th. Bungie will notify players who qualify and provide details of the next steps.
"This is an important checkpoint for us as we evaluate enhancements since Marathon's Alpha, including three maps, five runner shells, prox chat, adjusted gameplay rhythm, solo queue, enhanced narrative elements, and additional features," Bungie said. "That said, the Technical Test build is a work in progress and will only include a selection of what's planned for Marathon's final version, focused on the initial gameplay moments."
Additional details about the technical test and the actual experience can be located on Marathon's help page. But for players who aren't selected for the trial (or cannot participate), there's still good news: The developer says a public update on the state of the game is the next thing on the agenda once the test is over.
"There will be a comprehensive report on the game's progress in the near future after the private testing phase!" The studio announced.
