Mikel Merino's Double Ignites La Roja's Scoring Run in Commanding Victory Over Bulgarian Side
Everything commenced in Scottish soil and the momentum continues. That memorable night at Hampden represented merely Luis de la Fuente's second outing as Spain's head coach; many believed it could prove to be his last match in charge. Despite two Scott McTominay goals overcoming the Spanish national team, while almost all spectators anticipated his tenure would be short-lived, the coach spoke about a pathway opening - and remarkably, the man previously criticized of being unrealistic turned out right.

When the José Zorrilla chanted his name midway the first half, he had just drifted unnoticed into the penalty box once more, chipping his shot over Svetoslav Vutsov and onto the woodwork, but it was not only that. He had already lifted a magnificent pass into Álex Baena to strike wide and delivered an additional back from which Baena was denied.
Sustained Attack
A disguised pass had created opportunity for Samu Aghehowa up for what should have been the opener, and a neat lay-off saw Oyarzabal mishit his attempt. He got a chance of his own only to be unable to find a proper contact, striking wide.
But then, almost immediately after, he floated another ball in. This time Robin Le Normand headed across and Merino headed in. Spain, who had eighty-eight percent of the possession, then had the lead. The heat map looked like they had exhausted supply of marking paint midway through and a little later Aghehowa might have made it two.
Momentary Threat
But then in part it's the unpredictability, even the injustice, that makes football great. And the first time Bulgaria advanced into Spain's territory they might have equalized, Kiril Despodov abruptly sprinting away and striking the outside of the net.
Introduced for Aghehowa at the break, Borja Iglesias had multiple chances in as many minutes before Merino did it again. The cross from the left was excellent from Álex Grimaldo and there, jumping above everyone, was Merino to power the header downward and sprint to do laps around the flagpost.
Closing Stages
As they had after the first goal, Bulgaria escaped again, Despodov sent through and sending his and their second shot wide and nevertheless the first time the visitors had a shot on target it was at the incorrect goal, Atanas Chernev deflecting into his team's goal. Still it was not quite done, Merino fouled in the legs and allowing to let Oyarzabal smash in the ninety-ninth goal of De la Fuente's ongoing tenure.
