Swimming Organization Takes Action to Stop Fake Statements Attributed to Star Swimmer Mollie O’Callaghan

The national swimming federation has taken steps to stop what it calls “false information” and “false comments” attributed to Olympic champion Mollie O’Callaghan concerning trans swimmer Lia Thomas.

Online Content Circulate Inaccurate Statements

Remarks credited to O’Callaghan but not published from her online platforms has appeared in updates on Facebook, as well as on X, and claimed the swimming star would refuse to compete in the 2028 LA Games if a trans athlete is permitted to participate.

The statement wrongly credited to O’Callaghan contained a inflammatory remark that “competing in the same pool with Lia Thomas is absolutely an affront and a shame”.

Formal Response from Swimming Australia

The organization backed the star swimmer in a statement titled with “fabricated comments linked to Dolphin Mollie O’Callaghan”.

“At present, there are fabricated quotes linked to team member Mollie O’Callaghan seen on social media posts,” the organization stated this past Sunday.
“Never has O’Callaghan given an interview and given remarks on transgender athletes.
“Facebook’s parent company has been informed of the fake news, and O’Callaghan and the federation have asked the items to be removed.”

Latest Developments and Background

Updates that feature the comment attributed to O’Callaghan were still online on the platform on the following day, while a Meta spokesperson said that “we are reviewing the demand”.

The federation declined to make further comment.

American trans swimmer Lia Thomas is barred from competing in the female category under present World Aquatics regulations and was unable to challenge the regulations in the period before the recent Games.

World Aquatics put in place guidelines in 2022 which prohibit anyone who has gone through “any part of male development” from the women’s competition.
