Maybe it shouldn't have been so shocking that the team able to slow Arsenal's title charge would be led by Granit Xhaka, an ex-Gunner. The substitute Brobbey scored an injury-time equaliser after second-half goals from Bukayo Saka and Trossard had given Arsenal in the lead following a early goal from the home side captain Dan Ballard.
Proved to be a rocky night for the Premier League leaders, but Arsenal maintain a seven point lead over City, who host Liverpool on the weekend, and the hosts, though Chelsea could reduce the gap to six in the weekend's evening fixture.
Xhaka – who departed the Emirates Stadium in 2023 seeking what he described as a new challenge – has been exceptional in the promoted side's engine room this season after joining from the German club, but the 33-year-old's performances on Sunderland's home turf will not have shocked Arsenal fans. The Swiss international revived his Gunners stint under Mikel Arteta, who was reluctant to lose him.
Sunderland entered the game with nothing to lose after achieving the best start to a top-flight campaign by a promoted side over 10 games since Hull City in the 2008/09 term. A deflected strike from the midfielder against the Toffees on earlier in the week had boosted them up to fourth, a standing few home supporters would have predicted before a ball was kicked given that their side had spent almost a decade outside the Premier League.
Xhaka's experience, much of it earned during his seven years at Arsenal, and leadership have assisted the team quickly adjust to top-tier football. He appeared to thrive in the physicality of the encounter.
The Arsenal manager, again without Jesus, Martin Ødegaard, Havertz, Madueke, Gyökeres and Gabriel Martinelli, had an early concern when Merino, playing up front after scoring two goals in Tuesday night's 3-0 European win at Slavia Prague, was caught by an elbow from the defender as he attacked a ball into the Sunderland area. The forward was able to play on.
Eberechi Eze nearly cashed in of an error from Le Fée, who was dispossessed on the border of the box, but the attempt flew over the crossbar.
Isidor fired off target at the opposite side before another long stoppage after a clash of heads between the midfielder and Timber, who had to continue with a bandaged head.
A tougher setback was to follow for stunned Arsenal. Sunderland sent a free-kick into the visiting area and the captain held off Declan Rice to drive the shot past Raya after it was knocked out. It was the opening strike they had conceded since their last visit to the north-east in September's end, when they had underlined their championship potential with a last-gasp win over Newcastle.
Arsenal had kept a club-record eight consecutive clean sheets in every match since Nick Woltemade's goal against them at St James' Park.
The Black Cats ensured that it was another difficult visit to the area for Arsenal, who were under pressure for spells after the interval.
They required a moment of quality, and it arrived in the 54th minute. Rice won possession off Le Fée and a smooth attack involving the winger and Merino culminated in Saka beating Robin Roefs at his near post.
Arsenal pushed for a next score and Le Bris introduced a triple substitution to his attack – he brought on Brobbey, Talbi and Adingra – in the middle of the final period.
A further example of skill was not long in coming. Arsenal moved the ball from one flank to the other, and Trossard, just outside the box, created enough room to lash a right-footed strike into the top corner.
Raya had to be sharp in the final stages as Sunderland pushed for a second goal, but was unable to prevent an spectacular shot from Brobbey after the delivery was nodded into the penalty area. The strike was greeted by a huge roar.
Fittingly the defender – like Xhaka another ex-Gunner, this one coming through the youth system – had the final say with a flying challenge at the feet of Merino in the game's final moment.
