The Thunder star came to Oklahoma City in 2019.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander delivered the game-winning points deep into double overtime as the defending champions started their championship campaign with a 125-124 victory over the Houston Rockets.
Last season's MVP poured in 35 points, featuring two clutch free throws with just mere seconds remaining in the second overtime, giving the titleholders a winning beginning.
The Rockets' big man led all scorers with 39 points and also hit a personal-best five shots from beyond the arc.
But the Thunder's rookie, who added 28 points, played a major role together with the game's hero.
"Determination and defense," SGA said of their performance. "We know that when we execute on defence we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—shots, misses, good luck or misfortune. We did sufficient defensive work to secure the victory. We're pretty rusty, but it's a good start."
Prior to the game, Oklahoma's championship banner was raised at their home court, while the players were awarded their title rings.
The Thunder defeated the Indiana Pacers in last season's championship series. It was their first title since the team relocated in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 crown.
The Pacers will have the chance to get some early revenge on Friday when they host Oklahoma, while the Rockets return to action on the same day at the Pistons.
In other action, a huge performance of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine dimes from Luka Doncic was insufficient to stop his new team the Lakers from suffering a 119-109 defeat against the Warriors.
Jimmy Butler picked up 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter added 23 points for the road team.
Los Angeles were missing the NBA's all-time leading scorer James as he recovers from sciatica.
