Step 1: Understand the Types of IELTS Tests
First, you need to decide which version of the IELTS test suits your needs: IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training. The Academic test is intended for those who want to enroll in universities and other institutions of higher education. The General Training test is suitable for those migrating to Australia, Canada, or the UK, or applying for training programs and work experience in an English-speaking environment.
Step 2: Choose Your Test Format
IELTS can be taken on paper or on a computer. The choice depends on your preference and the availability of these options at test centers in Sri Lanka. The test format (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking) is the same for both methods, but computer-delivered tests offer more test dates and faster results.

Step 5: Register for the Test
To register, you’ll need to:
- Create an account on the website of your chosen test provider.
- Fill out the online application form.
- Upload a clear, color copy of your valid passport as it’s the only form of identification accepted by IELTS in Sri Lanka.
- Pay the test fee. As of 2023, the fee for the IELTS exam in Sri Lanka is approximately LKR 40,000, but it is subject to change, so check the latest fee when you register.
Step 6: Prepare for the Test
Once registered, prepare for the IELTS test by accessing the wide range of materials available online and through your test center. Many candidates find it helpful to take a preparatory course or use online practice materials to familiarize themselves with the test format and types of questions.
Step 7: Know the Test Day Rules
Be aware of the test day rules and what to expect. Arrive early, and bring the original passport you used for registration. Personal items like mobile phones are not allowed in the testing room. Additionally, listen to the supervisor’s instructions carefully throughout the testing session.
Step 8: Receive Your Results
Results for paper-based tests are available 13 days after the test, while computer-delivered tests offer results within 3 to 5 days. Your Test Report Form (TRF) will be mailed to you, and you can also view your results online.
